Beware of technology! The best horror movies for geeks

What makes horror movies really scary is when you really feel like what's happening in the movie could happen to you. We all use technology, so there is potentially nothing scarier than when technology decides to kill us.

What better way to get your Halloween frights than with these terrifying movies where technology is the biggest threat? After watching these movies, you will be afraid of televisions, cell phones, computers, spaceships, and all kinds of technology. So much so that you may find yourself choosing to live the simple life.

Hostile

It's hard to find a more tech-savvy horror movie than this one. It literally starts with a screenshot of one character watching a YouTube video, and then shows all the characters making Skype calls. How to make Skype calls through your browser. How to make Skype calls through your browser. I probably realized that Skype is one of those things that you usually forget to open. Well, you can get Skype in your browser. Read More And it remains that way for the entire movie, which is something you just don't see in today's world of CG and special effects.

While it's not the best movie you'll see this year, it's an interesting movie, and it's definitely unlike anything else in the wide world of horror movies.

Of course, there's a reason the characters are using all these social media and services, and that makes sense as the movie progresses. After seeing Hostile , The next time you get a message from a random stranger online, you might think twice before replying.

The ring

The Ring It's easily one of my favorite horror movies. This is a VHS tape that makes you die when you watch it. It is based on the Japanese movie. Ringu , and while that version is a bit scarier than the US version, this one will still send chills down your spine.

Sure, you probably won't find a random VHS tape out there, but you just might find a disc drive. USB, DVD, or even a smartphone that could play a video that somehow leads to its untimely demise.

The next time you sit in front of the TV to watch something, if you see a creepy looking girl crawling towards the screen, I recommend that you get up and calmly leave the room screaming your head off.

Event Horizon

This movie is a classic when it comes to technology and horror. Heck, it's a classic in terms of horror in general, and it's squarely on the must-see list for anyone who's a fan of the genre.

It starts out like a standard sci-fi movie, with a distress call from the starship known as the Event Horizon, leading our group of characters to investigate. From there, it goes from pure sci-fi to a tech-driven future horror movie, and it's definitely one that will freak you out.

There's something really twisted about taking a movie that feels like it should be in one genre and mixing it up in another. It makes you uncomfortable, and who knows, it might make you wary of any other sci-fi movie you watch. Star Trek Might not seem so innocent after looking at Event Horizon .

A missed call

Have you ever received a call from your own phone number? It's creepy, and it's hard not to feel a little uncomfortable when it happens. Sure, you know it's probably just a telemarketer using a call spoofer, but what if it's something more sinister?

That's what the plot of A Missed Call is about. When people get a certain call, they get killed. That leads our main character to investigate, as she's next on the list. In many ways, the plot is similar to The Ring , but it takes some interesting turns, and while it's not exactly the best movie I've ever seen, it's definitely creepy, and it hits home thanks to all of us who have phones.

Untraceable

Technically, this is more of a thriller than a horror movie, but it's still pretty creepy, and it features a lot of the tropes you'd expect to see in a horror movie. Basically, the plot is that a serial killer sets up webcams to view his victims and broadcasts them to the Internet. The more people watch the video, the sooner the killer will end his life.

It's made to look like torture porn in places, so despite not being a true horror movie, it definitely feels like one.

Personally, I'd rate it “average,” but the premise is interesting, and it made me feel uncomfortable on several occasions, and that's all you can ask for in a Halloween movie. See for yourself and the next time you see a strange video online, think about what could be connected to the other side.

Stay alive

As the game publisher of MakeUseOf, this is a movie that definitely hits home with me, as it is a video game that kills. This is a Resident Evil -like survival horror game where characters die in real life the same way they do in the game.

Everyone remembers that terrifying shot in the first. Resident Evil Game in which the zombie slowly turns around and looks at the camera with a face covered in blood. Now imagine that zombie walking out of the game and into the real world. That's basically what this movie is about..

I'm not going to sugarcoat it, this is not a very good movie. However, it still has a lot of entertainment value. In fact, it's arguably so bad that it's really good. Might make you think twice before you jump into your copy of Resident Evil or Amnesia .
