Twitch is testing automated, mandatory mid-roll ads

Twitch is experimenting with showing ads to users in the middle of a stream.

Controversially, streamers have no control over whether these ads play or when they occur.

New mid-roll ads on Twitch

Starting September 15, 2020, some viewers will see ads in the middle of a Twitch broadcast.

According to Twitch, this is an "advertising experience". It's unclear how long this experience will last, or how many users will be exposed to it (although Twitch claims this is a "small percentage of viewers").

When an ad is triggered, the stream will always work through picture-in-picture mode. However, the stream will be muted and you will only hear the announcement audio.

Mid-roll ads are not a new concept for Twitch. However, they have always been controlled by the streamer. These new ads are triggered by Twitch, not the creator.

Creators will get paid to run mid-roll ads, just like other types, and you won't see them if you're a Twitch Prime or Turbo subscriber.

How did the streamers react?

Some people who stream on Twitch are upset about the change. Currently, they have the ability to opt out of pre-roll ads, but they have no control over these new mid-roll ads.

Timthetatman, one of Twitch's biggest streamers, responded to the company's tweet asking how he could opt out.

Other creators responded negatively, saying it would lessen the impact of any exciting moments on the stream if an out-of-control ad suddenly started playing.

In a Twitter response to a creator, Twitch noted that "will monitor data from this experience, combined with your feedback, to improve and provide a better experience over time".

Will this impact Twitch viewing numbers?

Building a large and dedicated following on Twitch is no easy task. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication and a lot of time.

It remains to be seen whether these new mid-roll ads will have an impact on the audience figures. No doubt many creators will be keeping a close eye on the Twitch experience.
