Apple wants to bring television to life with augmented reality

With the rise of streaming services, companies like Apple are scrambling for views and thinking about how to stand out from the crowd.

Apple hopes to achieve this in particular through the introduction of augmented reality on Apple TV +. Which will allow you to use your phone or tablet to interact with TV shows.

Augmented reality is coming to Apple TV+

According to a Bloomberg report, augmented reality will be introduced to Apple TV+ in 2021.

Augmented reality lets you use your phone or tablet to overlay characters or objects in the real world. For example, you could watch one of Apple TV+'s new nature documentaries and use augmented reality to see a lion wandering around your living room.

This will be bonus content that goes along with a show or movie, rather than mandatory viewing, much like a director's commentary or deleted scenes.

According to those close to the project, Apple plans to launch this new feature in 2021. It was planned for this year, but the coronavirus pandemic has had an unforeseen impact on software development.

When Bloomberg contacted Apple for comment, its spokesperson declined to comment.

Attract Apple TV+ subscribers with bonus content

In addition to augmented reality, Apple is also moving into the world of podcasting.

The tech giant is believed to want to create podcast spin-off shows based on its existing Apple TV+ catalog, as well as original audio shows that could then be adapted for television.

While Apple TV+ costs $4.99/month, many users have earned a free year by purchasing an Apple product. It will soon be a year since the launch of this offer.

As such, a subscription bundle called Apple One is expected soon, which would bundle access to Apple TV+ with other services like Apple Music and Apple Arcade.

Is virtual reality the future of Apple?

Rumor has it that virtual and augmented reality will play a big part in Apple's future, with its next iPhone featuring better scanners that support faster loading for augmented reality.

Apple is rumored to release an augmented and virtual reality headset in 2022, followed by a set of AR glasses in 2023.

Until then, it will be exciting to see what new experiences Apple TV+ creates using augmented reality.
