However, it was a bad idea according to many people and they could have been right. Shortly after the vent started, Fortnite had to disable most emotes to reduce toxicity during the event. The entire event experience was built by ChaseJackman, GQuanoe, XWDFr and YU7A. The Creative Platform allows players to experience the event and teleports them to a reimagined version of Washington, DC in 1963, the location where Martin Luther King delivered the memorable speech during the March on Washington. However, a video game might not be the right platform for educational purposes, as proven by most gamers today, who have been caught using unparliamentary emotes that were clearly disrespectful.

Following these events which have been brought to light by many concerned Internet users, Fortnite has taken the decision to deactivate many emotes and in particular the most disrespectful ones, which are almost all the emotes in the game, for the event. A few 8s had been excepted and saved just for the MLK event.

There were several posts circulating on Twitter showing players doing very unnecessary and disrespectful emoticons in front of the ongoing speech, which was definitely disrespectful, not offensive. Players had even gone so far as to use racist "Thank God we're finally free" statements in front of the White and "Color" tabs. While it's clear that the Fortnite community is definitely not ready for in-game educational content, EPIC has chosen the right path by disabling emotes.
